Gynecomastia

What is Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia—overdevelopment of the male breasts—can occur in all males, regardless of age, beginning in infancy. As a result of too much of the female hormone estrogen or the male hormone testosterone, the glandular breast tissue swells and forms a breast bud. Males with gynecomastia have enlarged breasts which may feel rubbery or firm. The surgical procedure to correct gynecomastia is called reduction mammoplasty, during which the breast size is reduced, and the chest contours are flattened and enhanced.
Healthy men of relatively normal weight whose condition cannot be corrected through alternative medical treatment are candidates for gynecomastia. Adolescents can also benefit from surgery and may require additional procedures should breast development continue.

About the Procedure:
Gynecomastia can be treated by liposuction, excision of glandular breast tissue or excess skin, or a combination of both. The surgical team at LSU will review all options with you prior to choosing a surgical plan.
